Filing season for employers came to an end on the 31st May so the process now is for SARS to spend time validating these tax certificates. From July taxpayers will be able to start the process of completing their tax returns, with many hoping to claim expenses that they ordinarily would not e.g. Home Office Expenses. The majority of taxpayers will be auto assessed because they don’t have complicated structures and only have a single tax certificate. However, it’s important that taxpayers check these auto assessments and if they are not happy with the result, they must not accept the auto assessment. This will then give them the opportunity to engage with SARS and / or submit further information to support their request of a tax refund. So – taxpayers must stop and think before they submit their tax returns this year. 2020 had many unprecedented challenges, with taxpayers fighting to stay above water, and incurring expenses that, some of which they may, surprisingly, be entitled to recover
